The Basics of Goals

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

What are your goals and dreams? What do you aspire to or hope for? Goals help turn these “wishes” into reality. You can have what you desire with some planning and that is what goal setting is all about. Goal setting gives you the necessary confidence you need to know that you can have anything that you want in life.

What is a goal?

A goal is a dream that has a deadline.

Why should you set goals?

  • Goals give you direction; they give you a road map. You can’t arrive at a specific destination if you don’t know where you are going. When you know where you are going you will stop driving around in circles and head straight for your destination.
  • Goals create enthusiasm. Enthusiasm comes from within and when you have a goal, you have a purpose. Every day when you awaken you are excited to get up because you know where you are going and you are getting closer to reaching your dreams!
  • Goals make you happy. Your mind is alive because it has something encouraging to focus on. Goals help eliminate negative thoughts and discontentment.
  • Goals help you overcome obstacles. Obstacles are what you see when you take your sites off your goals, so if you don’t have goals, you’re forced to focus on obstacles.
  • Goals give you discipline. Goals make you mind yourself. Instead of just going through your everyday actions, now you will be asking yourself “Is this action taking me closer to or farther away from my goals?”
  • Goals give you confidence. When you have clearly defined and written goals, you move toward those goals with unshakeable confidence. You don’t let anything get in your way.

If goals are such a great thing then why don’t more people set them? The only reasons that seem reasonable are that people don’t know how and/or they just don’t understand the importance of setting goals.

How do you set goals?

You write them down using these key factors:

  • Your goals must be written in a present, positive state as if you have already achieved your goal.
  • Your goal must be measurable, attainable and tangible.
  • You must have a deadline, a timeframe, in place for when you will reach that goal.
  • You must list the obstacles and the solutions to overcome the obstacles you may encounter.
  • You must reward yourself when you reach predetermined milestones or when you reach your goal.

It is imperative that your goals incorporate these factors in order to be effective.

Be sure you set goals in every area of your life. A balanced life is a good life. The areas in which to set
goals for are:

  • Physical and health
  • Financial
  • Family and relationship
  • Spiritual
  • Educational and mental

Get serious about doing something for yourself. Writing down your goals and having a purpose to achieve your goals will benefit not only you, but your family and others around you.

First Step in Setting Goals

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

The very first thing you need to do in the goal setting process is to begin with the end in mind.  In other words, how does the movie end?

Once you can see the end, you need to ask yourself a question.

What is the purpose of my goal?  Having a purpose will give you reasons to pursue your goal.  Each day the choices you make are easy because you have a purpose.

Everyone will have a different purpose but it should have a positive outcome and should make a difference in the lives of one or more persons.  You may have more than one purpose so include all of your purposes.

Now that you know the reason you are pursuing a goal, write a present positive statement.  What this means is to write a sentence in present tense as if your goal has already been achieved.

Example 1:  Your end of the movie is that your children will be educated, successful adults and you want to provide the means for that outcome.

Write:  My children are happy and successful.  I provided love, encouragement and financial assistance helping them through college which aided in them becoming responsible adults.

Example 2:  Let’s say your end of the movie is that you are financially free from debt.

Write:  I am debt free and have the freedom and time to ____________________.

This is a brief description of step one on setting goals.  Think it through and write down your purpose.

How Goals Impact Your Life

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

In our post Plan Your Life, we promised to help you understand how significantly goals can impact your life.  When you set goals and follow the steps to achieve those goals, you will be amazed at the positive outcome it will have on you and your life.

By setting goals in the financial area, you can plan for financial independence so you don’t have to rely on anyone else. You should be able to choose to work; choose to do as you please.

By setting a goal of physical fitness and nutrition, it will enable you to accomplish anything you want. You will be healthy and fit and your mind will be clear, enabling you to reach for and work toward your goals.

By setting a goal of spiritual fulfillment, you will understand who you are and why you are here. You will know your purpose in life and be able to strive for that purpose.

By setting a goal of emotional stability, you can accept personal responsibility for your successes and failures. You will be able to deal with any emotional challenges that cross your path in life and continue to move forward instead of being dragged down.

Your goals will be specific to your life and the direction you want to go. The four examples above show how using just these four areas could impact the decisions you make every day.

The Importance of Goals in Your Life

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

In the last post, we promised to share some reasons why goals are essential.  Understanding the true importance of having clear specific written goals is the beginning of your journey to success.

The key to happiness is having dreams.
A goal is a dream with a deadline.

Goals and why they are vital:

  • You can’t hit a target you can’t see. There is no possible way of you getting what you want in life until you know exactly what you want. With goals you’ll be able to hit the bull’s eye.
  • Goals generate enthusiasm and give you a purpose with direction. With the excitement your goals create, you’ll work toward your objective with unfettered drive and determination.
  • Goals create confidence. They motivate you toward achievement with unshakeable assurance.
  • Goals produce discipline – making you mind yourself. Desire without discipline is disastrous. By just going through the actions you will confuse activity with achievement. Shuffling papers and not getting anything accomplished is just action; Tension relieving, not goal achieving.
  • If you don’t have goals, you are forced to focus on obstacles. Once you set a goal every decision you make all day long will affect that goal achieving or not achieving process. If you know the goal, you can say “Will this get me closer to my goal or farther from it?” It makes every decision process easy. It’s really simple when you have goals; there is no frustration or conflict.
  • You are successful if you have goals. Success is a journey not a destination. You become successful when you start working toward your goals. The definition of success is the continuous journey toward the achievement of predetermined worthwhile goals. Enjoy the journey.
  • Clear specific written goals fire up your reticular activating system (RAS) which a goal seeking region of your brain. RAS is responsible for motivation and achievement. It creates the process of arriving at a goal once the goal has been defined.
  • Your goals are an extension of your values. Goals keep your values in the forefront. Happiness is when you are living consistent with your values. Know what your values are and set goals from them.

What do you want?   You can achieve anything you want in life.

The key to success is making dreams with
a deadline come true.

Plan your Life

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

What is more important to you:  a one week vacation or your life?  How about a house or your life?

Generally, the average person spends 4 to 5 times more effort, time, and energy planning their vacation than they spend planning their life.  Similarly, the planning of a house gets a lot more attention than the planning of one’s life.

The taller the house the deeper the foundation; Likewise, the more we plan the higher we will go.  Or in the case of a vacation, with planning we can get to all the places we want to go.

The concept of planning your life is called goal setting.

We believe there are two reasons why only 3% of the American population has clear specific written goals.

1.  They don’t understand the true importance of having goals and the impact it would have on their life.
2.  They don’t know how to do it.

In the next few posts, we will share some information on these two points.

The Choice Is Yours

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

“Your life is the sum result of all the choices you
make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can
control the process of choosing, you can take control
of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom
that comes from being in charge of yourself.”

–  Robert F. Bennett

The Essence of Achieving Goals

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Fundamental to goal setting and achieving is hope, belief, confidence, optimism and a positive attitude.  These affirmative feelings are necessary to reaching your goals.

Conversely, pessimism, sarcasm, negativism, fear, doubt, paranoia and attitudes of condemn, complain, and blame are all counter to what it takes to achieve goals. By allowing these states of being, you empower the force that holds you back.
