The Basics of Goals

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

What are your goals and dreams? What do you aspire to or hope for? Goals help turn these “wishes” into reality. You can have what you desire with some planning and that is what goal setting is all about. Goal setting gives you the necessary confidence you need to know that you can have anything that you want in life.

What is a goal?

A goal is a dream that has a deadline.

Why should you set goals?

  • Goals give you direction; they give you a road map. You can’t arrive at a specific destination if you don’t know where you are going. When you know where you are going you will stop driving around in circles and head straight for your destination.
  • Goals create enthusiasm. Enthusiasm comes from within and when you have a goal, you have a purpose. Every day when you awaken you are excited to get up because you know where you are going and you are getting closer to reaching your dreams!
  • Goals make you happy. Your mind is alive because it has something encouraging to focus on. Goals help eliminate negative thoughts and discontentment.
  • Goals help you overcome obstacles. Obstacles are what you see when you take your sites off your goals, so if you don’t have goals, you’re forced to focus on obstacles.
  • Goals give you discipline. Goals make you mind yourself. Instead of just going through your everyday actions, now you will be asking yourself “Is this action taking me closer to or farther away from my goals?”
  • Goals give you confidence. When you have clearly defined and written goals, you move toward those goals with unshakeable confidence. You don’t let anything get in your way.

If goals are such a great thing then why don’t more people set them? The only reasons that seem reasonable are that people don’t know how and/or they just don’t understand the importance of setting goals.

How do you set goals?

You write them down using these key factors:

  • Your goals must be written in a present, positive state as if you have already achieved your goal.
  • Your goal must be measurable, attainable and tangible.
  • You must have a deadline, a timeframe, in place for when you will reach that goal.
  • You must list the obstacles and the solutions to overcome the obstacles you may encounter.
  • You must reward yourself when you reach predetermined milestones or when you reach your goal.

It is imperative that your goals incorporate these factors in order to be effective.

Be sure you set goals in every area of your life. A balanced life is a good life. The areas in which to set
goals for are:

  • Physical and health
  • Financial
  • Family and relationship
  • Spiritual
  • Educational and mental

Get serious about doing something for yourself. Writing down your goals and having a purpose to achieve your goals will benefit not only you, but your family and others around you.

You Choose Your Reaction; The 90/10 Rule

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Discovering the 90/10 Principle will change how you react to situations and it will positively change your life. This principle is written by Stephen Covey and we want to share it with you.

What is this principle?

10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean?

We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.

How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light. However, you can control your reaction; you can control how you react.

Let us use an example: You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just happened. What happens next will be determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over.

She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work.

You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit zone. After a 15-minute delay and throwing away $60 on a traffic fine, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye.

After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terribly. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home. When you arrive home, you find a small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.
Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day?

    A. Did the coffee cause it?
    B. Did your daughter cause it?
    C. Did the policeman cause it?
    D. Did you cause it?
    The answer is “D”.

You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day. Here is what could have and should have happened.

Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, “Its ok honey, you just need to be more careful next time.” Grabbing a towel, you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early to work and cheerfully greet the staff.

Notice the difference? Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended differently.

Why? Because of how you REACTED. You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% is determined by your reaction.

      90/10 Principle by Steven Covey

Understanding and applying the 90/10 principle WILL change your life!

Planning Your Day and Time Management Tips

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Planning is a critical piece of the puzzle in reaching your goals. Planning makes you extremely more productive because you have written down, and know exactly, what the major and the minor tasks are that you must accomplish each day.

Time, Time Management, PlanningHow many times have you actually thought “Oh don’t forget to do that tomorrow!” Then tomorrow comes and you completely forget about that very important task that really needed to be done. You get slammed with so many interruptions and favors that you either forget or you put that important task on the back burner because other some other urgent, but probably not important task, was taken on by you.

Stephen Covey writes about this phenomenon of getting overwhelmed with unimportant activities in his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People.” He divides tasks into 4 quadrants. The quadrants are labeled with the tags of important, not important, urgent and not urgent.

Important is something that creates results while urgent items are time sensitive or pressing on us.

This is how the quadrants work:

Quadrant 1 is Important and urgent – These things always get done because they are in your face and need to be taken care of right away like crises and result producing pressing issues.Time Management, Juggling Time, Planning, Scheduling

Quadrant 2 Important and not urgent – These are items that seem to always get put on the back burner of your life. This is where you really need to focus and plan because this is the quadrant where many goal action items can be accomplished. Goals seem to take a back seat and get bumped for urgent tasks or pressing issues. This is the quadrant you need to focus on – Important and not urgent.

Quadrant 3 Not Important and urgent – These are things like some calls, some mail, pressing matters, and some meetings that are all time sensitive but not productive and they do not create results.

Quadrant 4 Not important and not urgent – This is the fun square and it’s easy to spend a lot of time here. These are personal phone calls, emails, parties, pleasant activities, and busy work. Be careful not to spend too much of your time here. The key here is learning to say no to things that don’t produce results and have very little goal value.

Be conscientious of where you spend your time!

Now that you understand this theory of planning your time wisely, below are tips for planning.

You need a planner; just one calendar or planner.

    1. Every evening write down your task for the next day and be sure to write down at least on major goal action item.
    2. Write a specific time next to each task. This takes the guessing out of your day.
Let’s say you schedule to exercise at 6:00 a.m. When you wake up, you don’t say “Well should I work out?” No, you say “I have to get up, do my power start and get started on my work out!” And you are excited to do it!

Don’t use floating notes, which are pieces of paper not attached to anything of significance.

    1. If you don’t carry a portable planner to write appointments and tasks in then carry a small spiral notebook.
    2. Each evening when you begin to plan the next day, transfer everything to your planner, tear out that page and throw it away so you don’t have to look at it again.

Clear and organize your desk or work area at the end of every day. With an organized desk or work area you can jump right into your tasks saving you 15 to 30 minutes the next morning.

It is said that for every 10 minutes of planning, you will save at least one hour of time. This concept alone should motivate you to plan your day. This accounts for about 5 extra hours of time each week to work in quadrant 2!

Make it a habit to plan day planned and watch your life positively change!

“What one thing could you do in your personal and professional life that, if you did on a regular basis, would make a tremendous positive difference in your life? Quadrant II activities have that kind of impact. Our effectiveness takes quantum leaps when we do them.” – Stephen R. Covey from The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People

Turning Your Limiting Beliefs Into Empowering Beliefs

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

It is so important that you turn your limiting beliefs into empowering beliefs because in order to reach goals, you must believe in yourself.

I know I can do anything!

I know I can do anything!

If you have even the slightest inkling that you may not reach your goal, that notion will hold you back. You must empower yourself by taking charge of your beliefs so you can be at your greatest.

Limiting beliefs are caused by a lack of confidence and/or fear.

Why do we experience fear or a have lack of confidence? It just takes shape over the years from our environment, our teachers, parents, or a past event. The bottom line is that any limiting belief you have, was accepted by you and you alone.

Examples of limiting belief versus empowering beliefs:

I don’t have the time.    VS     I have plenty of time to do the things that are truly important.
I am depressed.             VS     I have total control over how I feel every day. I choose to be happy.
I’m not smart enough.    VS     I am intelligent and I can learn anything that I desire
Its too late to start.       VS     I am starting today or Its never too late to start.

Write down any limiting beliefs you have and then write an empowering belief next to that.
Rewrite only your empowering beliefs on a clean piece of paper.
Every morning when you awaken, read your new beliefs.

If its fear that is causing your limiting beliefs, you need to take steps to overcome whatever is causing that fear. Get out of your comfort zone. Don’t let fear hold you back. Believe that you can, and you can, do anything. You are capable.

Write down any fears that you need to overcome in order to reach your goals.
Write down the steps you must take to overcome that fear.
Commit to get out of your comfort zone and start taking empowering steps.

Move past any self defeating beliefs and stop using words and phrases like “I can’t” and “impossible.” From today forward, catch yourself every time you say “I can’t” or have any negative notions. Commit to saying only positive, uplifting phrases about yourself.

Everything you want is just outside your comfort zone. – Robert Allen

Clear Off That To-Do List!

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Does your to-do list just keep growing and you are not getting around to many of the tasks?

Your “list” can actually be detrimental and make you feel overwhelmed. To renew yourself and to re-energize, take these steps:

1. Determine if this task really has to be done, and if not, eliminate it from your list
2. Move any task that is not time sensitive to a long term list that you don’t look at every day
3. Choose a day and complete the tasks left on your list – all of them

A to-do list should make you feel good each time you are able to cross something off. By starting with a clean slate, you will feel happy because you will see your list shorten instead of grow!

“Sometimes the greatest gain in productive energy will come from cleaning the cobwebs, dealing with old business, and clearing the decks.” — David Allen

Persistence – A Key Factor to Success

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Do you wonder what it takes to be at the top of your field?  What about in the top 3% of income earners?  Research shows it is not your IQ, a degree from a university or your childhood.

Thomas J. Stanley, author of The Millionaire Mind, surveyed hundreds of millionaires and he found that most of the respondents did not inherit their money, go to Ivy League Colleges, nor were they at the top of their class throughout school.  Most of these individuals attribute their fortunes to hard work, persistence and attitude.

Let’s talk about persistence now and we’ll cover hard work and attitude in future articles.

If persistence pays off then why doesn’t every just be persistent?  Because persistence takes discipline and tenacity; you must be willing to pay the price and sometimes put everything else on hold.   You must have the drive and determination to do what has to be done without giving in.   You must figure out a way to overcome obstacles and unforeseen hurdles and to build a foundation for good habits.

How to be persistent:

  • Figure out what you want to accomplish, your goal. Write it in the SMARTR format.
  • Write down what you need to do to reach your goal.
  • Write down your obstacles.  Now write down what you can do to overcome those obstacles.
  • What new habits need to be created to get you to your goal? Write down the steps you must take.
  • Reward yourself along the way.   Each small success will lead to another and then another.
  • Never stop with the first no and don’t listen to others who say “just quit”.
  • Surround yourself with successful people.  They work as hard as you do.
  • Never, never give up.

Any one of us can be at the top of our field, be in the top 3% of income earners, or anything else we strive for.  With some hard work, persistence and attitude we can achieve our dreams, our passions, and our desires.

Never give up on your dreams…Perseverance is all important.  If you don’t have the desire and the belief in   yourself to keep trying after you’ve been told you should quit, you’ll never make it.  –  Tawni O’Dell

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Say this in the evening:

I am waking up at  __( time ) a.m._  in the morning because I know it creates the time to get the things done that will lead toward the achievement of my goals.  I am so excited about reaching my goal of __( insert goal )___.      I am going to bed at  __( time ) p.m.__  and I will feel great tomorrow because ________  hours is plenty of sleep for me to feel great and to be able to achieve what is truly important to me.

Say this in the morning:

I enjoy waking up each morning at  __( time )a.m.__  because I know it creates the time to get the things done that will lead toward the achievement of my goals.   I had plenty of sleep and I feel great!  I will do the most important step toward reaching my goal of ________________ first, before anything else, because that is what is truly important to me.

First Step in Setting Goals

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

The very first thing you need to do in the goal setting process is to begin with the end in mind.  In other words, how does the movie end?

Once you can see the end, you need to ask yourself a question.

What is the purpose of my goal?  Having a purpose will give you reasons to pursue your goal.  Each day the choices you make are easy because you have a purpose.

Everyone will have a different purpose but it should have a positive outcome and should make a difference in the lives of one or more persons.  You may have more than one purpose so include all of your purposes.

Now that you know the reason you are pursuing a goal, write a present positive statement.  What this means is to write a sentence in present tense as if your goal has already been achieved.

Example 1:  Your end of the movie is that your children will be educated, successful adults and you want to provide the means for that outcome.

Write:  My children are happy and successful.  I provided love, encouragement and financial assistance helping them through college which aided in them becoming responsible adults.

Example 2:  Let’s say your end of the movie is that you are financially free from debt.

Write:  I am debt free and have the freedom and time to ____________________.

This is a brief description of step one on setting goals.  Think it through and write down your purpose.

How Goals Impact Your Life

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

In our post Plan Your Life, we promised to help you understand how significantly goals can impact your life.  When you set goals and follow the steps to achieve those goals, you will be amazed at the positive outcome it will have on you and your life.

By setting goals in the financial area, you can plan for financial independence so you don’t have to rely on anyone else. You should be able to choose to work; choose to do as you please.

By setting a goal of physical fitness and nutrition, it will enable you to accomplish anything you want. You will be healthy and fit and your mind will be clear, enabling you to reach for and work toward your goals.

By setting a goal of spiritual fulfillment, you will understand who you are and why you are here. You will know your purpose in life and be able to strive for that purpose.

By setting a goal of emotional stability, you can accept personal responsibility for your successes and failures. You will be able to deal with any emotional challenges that cross your path in life and continue to move forward instead of being dragged down.

Your goals will be specific to your life and the direction you want to go. The four examples above show how using just these four areas could impact the decisions you make every day.

The Importance of Goals in Your Life

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

In the last post, we promised to share some reasons why goals are essential.  Understanding the true importance of having clear specific written goals is the beginning of your journey to success.

The key to happiness is having dreams.
A goal is a dream with a deadline.

Goals and why they are vital:

  • You can’t hit a target you can’t see. There is no possible way of you getting what you want in life until you know exactly what you want. With goals you’ll be able to hit the bull’s eye.
  • Goals generate enthusiasm and give you a purpose with direction. With the excitement your goals create, you’ll work toward your objective with unfettered drive and determination.
  • Goals create confidence. They motivate you toward achievement with unshakeable assurance.
  • Goals produce discipline – making you mind yourself. Desire without discipline is disastrous. By just going through the actions you will confuse activity with achievement. Shuffling papers and not getting anything accomplished is just action; Tension relieving, not goal achieving.
  • If you don’t have goals, you are forced to focus on obstacles. Once you set a goal every decision you make all day long will affect that goal achieving or not achieving process. If you know the goal, you can say “Will this get me closer to my goal or farther from it?” It makes every decision process easy. It’s really simple when you have goals; there is no frustration or conflict.
  • You are successful if you have goals. Success is a journey not a destination. You become successful when you start working toward your goals. The definition of success is the continuous journey toward the achievement of predetermined worthwhile goals. Enjoy the journey.
  • Clear specific written goals fire up your reticular activating system (RAS) which a goal seeking region of your brain. RAS is responsible for motivation and achievement. It creates the process of arriving at a goal once the goal has been defined.
  • Your goals are an extension of your values. Goals keep your values in the forefront. Happiness is when you are living consistent with your values. Know what your values are and set goals from them.

What do you want?   You can achieve anything you want in life.

The key to success is making dreams with
a deadline come true.

Plan your Life

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

What is more important to you:  a one week vacation or your life?  How about a house or your life?

Generally, the average person spends 4 to 5 times more effort, time, and energy planning their vacation than they spend planning their life.  Similarly, the planning of a house gets a lot more attention than the planning of one’s life.

The taller the house the deeper the foundation; Likewise, the more we plan the higher we will go.  Or in the case of a vacation, with planning we can get to all the places we want to go.

The concept of planning your life is called goal setting.

We believe there are two reasons why only 3% of the American population has clear specific written goals.

1.  They don’t understand the true importance of having goals and the impact it would have on their life.
2.  They don’t know how to do it.

In the next few posts, we will share some information on these two points.

The Choice Is Yours

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

“Your life is the sum result of all the choices you
make, both consciously and unconsciously. If you can
control the process of choosing, you can take control
of all aspects of your life. You can find the freedom
that comes from being in charge of yourself.”

The Essence of Achieving Goals

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

Fundamental to goal setting and achieving is hope, belief, confidence, optimism and a positive attitude.  These affirmative feelings are necessary to reaching your goals.

Conversely, pessimism, sarcasm, negativism, fear, doubt, paranoia and attitudes of condemn, complain, and blame are all counter to what it takes to achieve goals. By allowing these states of being, you empower the force that holds you back.
